Turn What You Have Into Cat Heaven

Let’s start with the basics: if you’ve got a box, you’ve got a cat bed. Especially if that box is near a window. That’s free cat entertainment right there. Got a bookshelf? Clear off a shelf and boom it’s a cat perch. They’ll claim it the second you walk away.

Want to make a cozy bed? Grab a blanket or any fabric scrap, shape it into a little nest, and your cat will plop right in. My cat Love’s favorite thing in the world is the sweatshirt bed I make every day. I tuck the hood in so she doesn’t chew the strings. Then roll the bottom up, wrap the sleeves around, and there it is a bed that smells like me.

Fake Fancy Cat Furniture

Cats love height. If you don’t have a cat tree, you can fake it. Stack boxes. Use a dresser. Place a chair by a window. Bonus points if the layout gives them something to climb or jump between. Think of it as building a little parkour course.

DIY Scratching Solutions

Scratching is not optional. If you don’t give them something to scratch, they’ll find something else like your couch. A cardboard box wrapped in fabric can do the trick. Or, if you want something more solid, grab a 2×4, some sisal rope, and a few brackets. Mount it on the wall (horizontal or vertical) and you’ve got a legit scratcher.

Free Puzzle Feeders and Toys

You don’t need to buy anything to keep your cat entertained. For puzzle feeders, toss a few treats into a blanket and let your cat dig around. You can also use toilet paper rolls or egg cartons. For toys, the number one favorite? A crumpled piece of paper. Especially if you have hardwood floors. The sound, the weight, the feel, chef’s kiss.

Also, any kind of string is basically crack for cats. Hoodie strings, shoelaces, ribbons—they’re obsessed. Always supervise when playing with string. Safety first.

Everyone Needs a Timeout Spot

Cats need downtime too. Create a quiet zone with blankets, a soft pillow, and natural light. It’s their little getaway. And if you’ve got breakables, move them higher or block access. You don’t have to give up cute decor, just cat-proof it.

Oh, and kitchen counters? We don’t do that. Especially if there’s garlic, hot pans, or knives involved. My rule is: they stay off the counter when I’m using it. That’s the compromise.
