Your cat lives inside, so your home is their whole world. If you want your indoor cat to feel happy, safe, and entertained, you don’t need to spend a ton of money or turn your house into a full-on jungle gym. A few smart upgrades can totally change the vibe for your furry roommate.
Cat Friendly Home Setup
Give Them a Soft Place to Land
Every room in my house has a cat bed. One by the window, one by my desk, one in their own little cat cave. If you don’t want to buy fancy mats or fluffy donut beds, just fold up an old blanket or use a box. Cats don’t care if it’s designer. They just want a comfy spot to loaf.
Add Vertical Space
Cats are climbers. They like to be up high where they can survey their kingdom like the little weirdos they are. Wall shelves, tall scratchers, and floor-to-ceiling cat trees are perfect. I’ve DIY’d some and bought others. Both work. Just check the weight limit before you start drilling, especially if your cat is extra fluffy.
Don’t Skip the Window Perch
Windows are cat TV. They’ll sit and watch birds, bugs, squirrels, or whatever chaos is happening outside for hours. If you don’t have a window seat, you can add a suction cup perch, a shelf, or a piece of furniture next to the window. Bonus points for a bird feeder.

Create Play Zones
I keep springs and crinkle balls in a bowl by the couch so I can toss them around when the cats are feeling spicy. Puzzle feeders are also a big hit in my house. They help with mental stimulation and keep your cat from getting bored.
Elevate the Food Station
Elevated bowls help with digestion. I use an old towel as a DIY feeding mat because my two little gremlins were chewing up the store-bought ones. It’s cute, washable, and works great.
Water Fountains Are a Game-Changer
Cats love moving water. It feels safer to them, and it encourages them to drink more. I use a cordless fountain so I can put it anywhere. Hydrated cats = healthy cats.
Hide That Litter Box
Nobody wants to look at an open litter box in the living room. I built a custom enclosure, but there are cute ones online that look like furniture, too.

Add Some Cat Friendly Greenery
Cat grass. Catnip. Safe houseplants. A few little touches like these can make your home feel like it belongs to your cat as much as it does to you.
Final Thoughts
You don’t have to do everything at once. Start with what works for you and build from there. Your cat will love the upgrades and, so will you.
