What comes in the Basepaws Cat DNA Test kit?
Everything that you need comes in the box. You get the swab, container, bag, and prepaid postage box for your sample.
What is the process for collecting the sample?
If you have ever done your own personal DNA test before the process is very similar. All the information you need comes in the box along with a diagram. After you open the box immediately go to the Basepaws website and register your kit. Do not forget to do this or you will not be able to get your results. Then you take the little swab and stick it in your cat’s mouth swabbing the inside cheek. Next, you stick it into a fluid, close the lid, shake it up, and put it in a sample bag. Finally, you would put it in the self-addressed shipping box and send it back to Basepaws.
How hard is it to get your cat’s DNA sample?
I didn’t find it hard at all, but my cats are used to me opening their mouth to administer medicine. The cats didn’t love the process, but it wasn’t terrible for them either. If you have a cat that doesn’t like to have its mouth touched, I would recommend wrapping them in a towel. Then you can get the sample and avoid any potential headaches.
How long does it take to get your results back?
You get your results back in 4 to 6 weeks from when they receive the sample. They will send you an email letting you know they got your sample.
If for some reason something goes wrong, and your Basepaws Cat DNA Test can’t be sequenced they will send you out another kit or refund your money.
What does the Basepaws Cat DNA Test Report contain?
The first page gives you a summary of the full report. It is an overview of your cat’s breed groups, oral health report, health markers, trait markers, and blood type.
Then the report goes into detail about your results. My report was 68 pages long.
First, it gives you a breakdown of your cat’s breed analysis. This is all information about the breed’s origin, personality, history, and genetic predispositions.
Second, you get a full health summary which gives you all the info on your cat’s genetic health markers. If your cat shows “at-risk” for a genetic health marker you can keep an eye out for any issues.
Next, you get your cat’s results for traits they might have. This info was so interesting to me. We learned that Boots had a trait that affected his coat color. He has the dilute coat color trait which alters his coat color from black to gray.
Lastly, you get your cat’s full oral health report. This screens your cat for periodontal disease, tooth resorption, and halitosis. These are the most common conditions that affect your cat’s oral health. However, most dental diseases are treatable if caught early.
For no extra cost, Basepaws will send your cat’s DNA test results to your vet if you provide that information.
