Why Do Cats Love Doorway Carpets So Much?

If your cat has turned the carpet by your door into their personal claw spa, I get it. Mine did too. Scratching is a weird mix of instinct, territory claiming, and boredom. And for whatever reason, doorways seem to scream “scratch me!” to a lot of cats.

What Finally Worked in My House

After saying “no” like a broken record, I came up with something to stop the scratching. At least my carpet. It’s a super simple DIY that takes about 10 minutes and costs next to nothing. You probably already have the stuff lying around.

It’s a double-sided DIY welcome mat made with cardboard and sticky shelf liner. One side goes on the inside of your door, the other on the outside. This protects the carpet from kitty’s claws. Plus, the sticky paper underneath makes it way less fun for them to go full chaos gremlin.

What You’ll Need:

  • A cardboard box
  • Sticky shelf liner or contact paper (I used Dollar Tree stuff)
  • Scissors or a box cutter
  • Measuring tape if you’re into precision (I just kinda eyeballed mine)

How to Make It:

  1. Cut your cardboard to fit both sides of the doorway — one piece inside, one outside.
  2. Wrap each piece in shelf liner.
  3. Wrap it a few times. You want them to feel the sticky layer once they get through the top part.
  4. Place each one like a doormat. Boom. Done.

Why It Works:

Cats hate sticky textures, and they love layers they can shred. This mat gives them something to scratch through before they can get to your carpet.

You can buy a plastic version online, but this is cheaper, faster, and way more satisfying to make.
