If your cat loves chewing on your houseplants, it might be time to introduce them to cat grass. It’s cheap, easy to grow, and my cats treat it like their own little salad bar. I’ve been growing cat grass for years, and it’s one of my favorite ways to keep True and Love happy, healthy, and out of trouble.

Why Cat Grass Is a Must-Have for Cats
Cat grass is usually a mix of wheatgrass, oat, rye, or barley that’s safe for cats to nibble on. It helps with digestion, reduces furballs, and can distract your cat from chewing on toxic houseplants. My cats graze on it every day like tiny lawn mowers. It also adds a little enrichment to their day. Indoor cats love anything that feels fresh and “wild,” and cat grass gives them that.

How I Grow Cat Grass
You don’t need fancy equipment. I use a simple plastic pot from Dollar Tree and basic potting soil. Here’s what I do:
- Sprinkle the seeds on top of the soil.
- Lightly press them in and cover with a thin layer of soil.
- Water gently, but don’t overdo it.
- Place the pot in a sunny window or outside.
Within a few days, you’ll see sprouts, and in less than two weeks, it’s tall enough for your cat to enjoy. Because my cats devour it so quickly, I keep two pots rotating—one growing and one ready for snacking.
Low Maintenance and Long-Lasting
The seeds I use last forever. I’ve been using the same bag for almost 10 years, and I’m only on my second bag. It’s linked below if you want to grab the same one. You’ll get plenty of cat grass without spending much.
It even holds up in winter. I’ve left mine outside in the snow, and it just keeps growing. When the grass starts to wilt, I plant a new batch. Keeping it fresh means my cats always have something to munch on.
