How to Train Your Cat to Use a Scratching Post
First, Know That Scratching Is a Need (Not a Nuisance)
Cats scratch to stretch, shed their claw sheaths, mark territory, and relieve stress. It’s instinct. You’re not trying to stop the scratching. You’re trying to redirect it.
The trick is getting them to choose the post over or anything they’ve decided is fair game.
Choose the Right Scratcher (Because Your Cat Has Opinions)
Cats can be picky. Some prefer horizontal scratchers. Others like vertical ones. Some love angled scratchers. And don’t get me started on materials. There’s sisal rope, cardboard, carpet, fabric. It’s a whole thing.
Here’s what helps:
- Offer a variety of scratchers around the house
- Test different positions and materials
- Make sure at least one scratching post is tall enough for a full-body stretch
- And above all, get something sturdy. If it wobbles, they’ll avoid it
If they ignore the one you bought, it doesn’t mean they hate all scratchers. It probably means you haven’t found their type yet.

Make the Post Irresistible
So now you’ve got the right post. Great. But how do you actually get your cat to use it?
Here’s what works:
Catnip Everything
Sprinkle it. Rub it in. Spray it. And if your cat ignores traditional catnip, try silvervine. Just a little on the scratcher is usually enough to grab their attention.
Play Near the Post
Dangle a wand toy nearby or drag a string past it. Cats can’t help themselves. One accidental scratch, and they’re like, “Oh hey… this actually feels good.”
Put It in the Right Spot
If your cat always claws the arm of your couch, guess where the scratcher should go? Right there. You can move it later, but location matters when you’re first training them.

Praise & Bribe
Yes, really. When they use it, celebrate like they just won a trophy. Give them pets, a treat, or a little “good kitty!” Cats respond to vibes and bribes.
